Participating students from Bethpage High School and John F. Kennedy Middle School experienced sailing. The students divided into two groups, pulling on the halyards to raise the main sails. They harnessed the wind and the historical ship (Christeen) was off at an impressive pace. A very knowledgeable marine education specialist brought aboard an aerated cooler containing a variety of creatures that dwell in the waters below deck. The students met, held, and learned about many aquatic animals, some of which our students never encountered before. After the sail, a seine net was pulled along the shore, to collect specimens for the Marine Science Club’s saltwater tank. The students were amazed by how many juvenile fish were caught in one pass of the net. The entire experience was a testimony to the richness of our local estuaries.
